Within days of purchasing our tickets, Randy suggested getting certified in SCUBA so we could partake in some glorious underwater swimming. Sure, why not, I thought. Two days later we were given textbooks, CDs, DVDs, quizzes, a then-confusing-dive table and the assignment to read Chapters 1-3 by the first class. OY! Next thing you know, we’re in the local pool swimming with BCs and tanks on our backs. All I could think about was how much I felt like a Russian Frogman or foreign spy. Anyway, the three weeks of intense classes paid off, especially since the Hawaii weather wasn’t exactly sunny when we were there. Warm, but no sun. So we spent a lot of time underwater. We saw lots of colorful tropical fish, green sea turtles and manta rays. On the day of my actual birthday, we dove three times, the last one being a night dive with manta rays.
